2010 ASCL Award winners announced at Luna Park

The Supply Chain & Logistics Association of Australia (SCLAA) announced the winners of the 2010 Australian Supply Chain and Logistics Awards on Thursday the 28th of October at the Crystal Palace, Luna Park, Sydney.
The awards evening was proudly supported by SupplyChain Review, Australia’s Best, The Department of Transport and Main Roads, Strategix Training Group, Dematic, Loscam, VersaCold, Victoria University Institute of Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Bluestone Recruitment, CH2, New South Wales Transport and Infrastructure and SSI Schaefer.
With the highest amount of entries across all states the judging was even more difficult for 2010, with the winners and high commendations standing out as exceptional submissions.
SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT AWARD
The aim of this award is to encourage and acknowledge the outstanding achievement of an organisation that has demonstrated significant achievement in managing the integration of Supply Chains. The trophy was first awarded in 1984 and is dedicated to Doug Beattie.
Finalists are 14 Degrees Logistics, Metcash, Nufarm Australia, Schenker Australia, Transperth and VersaCold Logistics Services.
A HIGH COMMENDATION GOES TO 14 DEGREES LOGISTICS
14 Degrees Logistics is a new third-party logistics (3PL) provider, offering end-to-end supply chain and logistics services to the wine industry in Australia and New Zealand. 14 Degrees Logistics offers an unlimited range of wine supply chain and logistics services covering every aspect of wine production and distribution. Their supply chain model reduces the handling and transport associated with the bottling and distribution of wine, optimising the quality of the end product. Building their new facility in Port Melbourne is a long-term investment in the Australian wine industry. Whether it’s bottling, short to long-term storage, pick, pack, delivery or export, the flexibility of their DC provides the ability to cost-effectively process orders from full container loads down to a single bottle.
THE WINNER OF THE 2010 SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT AWARD IS METCASH
Metcash is a leading marketing and distribution company operating in the food and other fast moving consumer goods categories and the champion of Australia’s independent grocers and the distributor of choice for the convenience store market. Metcash has implemented a step change in the way orders for split-case orders are fulfilled. Picking high volumes of these orders conventionally is labour intensive, time consuming and costly. To provide their customer base with a better, faster, more accurate, reliable and cost-effective quality of service, Metcash has introduced a new approach to split-case order fulfilment. Metcash have also been jointly responsible for the design and implementation of an automated Goods-to-Person (GTP) order system, which provides an unparalleled level of flexibility and efficiency in split-case order assembly.
TRAINING, EDUCATION & DEVELOPMENT AWARD
To be presented to the company or institution that best demonstrates a significant achievement in aspects such as recruitment process, training, HR Systems, formal education and development programs which is both relevant to and promotes the Supply Chain and Logistics Industry. The trophy was first awarded in 2002 and is dedicated to the late Professor Peter Gilmour.

A HIGH COMMENDATION GOES TO CURTIN UNIVERSITY
Curtin University logistics and supply chain degree programs have been providing a unique education and training opportunity for transport professionals in Western Australia as well as the broader Asia pacific region. The programs offered by Curtin focuses on developing supply chain skills as well as general business skills. The content has been developed with substantial input from industry and is regularly benchmarked against the best universities in the world. Curtin continually strives to offer a well rounded education that provides graduates the maximum opportunity for advancement in the supply chain profession.
THE 2010 TRAINING, EDUCATION & DEVELOPMENT AWARD WINNER IS J.J.RICHARDS & SONS

STORAGE & HANDLING OF MATERIALS AWARD
This award recognises the significant achievements in the techniques and technology of materials storage and handling at any stage of the Supply Chain. Technology covers equipment and design techniques, including facilities design, and associated information and control systems. The trophy was first awarded in 1980 and is dedicated to Dexion’s Founder, Demetrius Comino, OBE.

THE 2010 STORAGE & HANDLING OF MATERIALS AWARD WINNER IS AUTOPARTS
In 2007 Autoparts (a Toyota’s parts and accessories arm in Western Australia) was faced with the challenge of converting a facility that the business had grown out of, into one that the business could grow into. The conversion had to be a seamless transition from the old to the new, no loss of sales, minimal disruption to staff and a new, and a highly functional Warehouse Management System had to be designed and implemented. The entire facility was revamped and at any point during the process 50% of the facility was quarantined. Autoparts today is a vastly different company to the one inherited back in 2007. The outcomes have not only seen the business grow to record sales levels but of more importance the project has delivered Autoparts a sustainable pathway forward for continued growth.
ENVIRONMENTAL EXCELLENCE AWARD
This award recognises corporate leadership contributing to the solution of environmental sustainability within our industry through performance and action. The trophy was first awarded in 1966 and is dedicated to Mr Ken Pike.

A HIGH COMMENDATION GOES TO CEVA VEHICLE LOGISTICS
CEVA Vehicle Logistics Eco Driver Training Program is realising significant reductions in fuel burn, reducing wear and tear of equipment, and maximising safer and more efficient transportation. Results from this training has so far seen an average improvement in fuel burn of 15.4 per cent and overall measured reduction in carbon emissions of 193,800Kgs. The benefits of fuel?efficient driving have generated real savings in greenhouse gas emissions and fuel costs for CEVA Logistics and represents CEVA’s commitment to contribute, challenge, communicate and apply the world’s leading thinking in sustainability.
THE WINNER OF THE 2010 ENVIRONMENTAL EXCELLENCE AWARD IS COCA-COLA AMATIL
Coca-Cola Amatil recently opened the new distribution centre at Eastern Creek, which is being part-powered by almost 700 solar panels on its roof. The $1.2 million 110 kilowatt solar photovoltaic system will generate 148 hours of clean renewable energy every year, translating into a reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of 148 tonnes annually. This provides up to 20% of the distribution centre’s energy needs. The facility also includes C-Bus lighting controls, which will save up to 1400 tonnes of GHG every year, and water tanks which will harvest 240,000 litres of rainwater. Contributing to the new standards for industrial buildings in Australia with the opening of their new Eastern Creek distribution centre, it represents the innovation and community consideration that CCA strive to achieve as a corporation and their commitment to large and small solutions across their business.
INFORMATION MANAGEMENT AWARD
This award will go to the business that can best demonstrate it has made a significant achievement in the application of information technology within its Supply Chain. The trophy was first awarded in 1994 and is dedicated to the late Len Smith FAIMM.

THE 2010 INFORMATION MANAGEMENT AWARD WINNER IS CEEBRON
Ceebron's mission is to help build a more efficient, reliable, and accountable cold chain for shippers of perishable goods. Ceebron have developed the Smart-Trace system, which is the only system currently available that provides prompt notification of movement and temperature events for perishable products throughout the supply chain at pallet load level. The Smart-Trace system provides an independent audit record for evidence of regulatory compliance and a capacity to predict any shelf-life impact of time/temperature abuse on the product.
MANUFACTURING LOGISTICS AWARD
This award recognises significant achievement within the manufacturing sector with regard to the integration of manufacturing and the Supply Chain from raw material procurement through to customer delivery. This may include re-thought, reengineered Supply Chain, integration of the Supply Chain and manufacturing, improved operations and execution. The trophy was first awarded in 1963 and is dedicated to the late Mr. W. (Bill) Cribben.
Finalists are: Bega Cheese and 14 Degrees Logistics.
THE 2010 MANUFACTURING LOGISTICS AWARD WINNER IS BEGA CHEESE
Bega Cheese has demonstrated the impacts and approach taken following Bega Cheese’s purchase of Kraft’s processed cheese facility in Strathmerton. The purchase of the Strathmerton facility addressed the strategic imperatives of increased conversion capacity, capability and redundancy/risk management. The ultimate objective was to integrate and rationalise their business as quickly as possible, maintaining or improving customer service outcomes whilst providing strategic growth platforms and profitability. Profit have been realised through operational efficiencies, dynamic stock management, and utilisation of best demonstrated practice. Bega Cheese continues to maintain their aim of being smarter and better in all that they do.
T&L INDUSTRY EXCELLENCE AWARD
This prestigious award recognises and acknowledges the outstanding achievements and contribution by an individual currently working within the Transport, Supply Chain and Logistics Industry. The judges will be looking for individuals who have demonstrated vision and leadership, shows innovation and not afraid to take risks. This trophy was first awarded in 1987 and is dedicated to Mr Mike Munns, FAIMM.

John Edwards is the Managing Consultant for ProcureNet Queensland and has been passionately involved in the Skills Formation Strategy project. He has been consistent, visionary and courageous with his approach and contribution to the development of strategies to better unite and define the industry. He has consistently shown passion for ‘what’s good for industry’ and energised and organised his project group to be focussed on the issues we need to start addressing as an industry. John has always been willing -behind the scenes and without want of recognition- to fund, drive and lead activities and discussions for industry’s betterment in his own time. This industry desperately needs more people like John Edwards.
THE 2010 T&L INDUSTRY EXCELLENCE AWARD WINNER IS CHRIS MANGAN
Chris Mangan has had a wide and distinguished career in the supply chain profession. More recently, Chris offered to Chair the Skills Formation Strategy project into the Transport & Logistics industry in Queensland. The aim of the project was ultimately to help industry better coordinate an internal strategic planning capability for those issues likely to impact it over the coming decades. Chris, from day one of the project, showed vision, bipartisanship and leadership driving the direction of this project and all the industry members associated with/within it. Chris’s leadership style has always been open, direct, visionary and clear, & he has always committed his experience and passion to causes that make our industry more professional, sustainable and productive.
T&L FUTURE LEADERS AWARD

Some of Cassandra’s major achievements include the rollout of the Learning Management Solution throughout QR Regional Freight elements and assisted in the development & rollout of the Masters in Rail Operations Management Program within QR National. Cassandra is an active participant in professional young groups throughout industry and has a wonderful passion to stay within and significantly influence our profession.
THE WINNER OF THE 2010 T&L FUTURE LEADERS AWARDS IS STANLEY FAN.
Stanley Fan is an outstanding Future Leader for our profession. His achievements to date rival those of seasoned industry professionals and have produced transformational results within his current role as Stock and Logistics Officer for Trinix, as well as being actively involved as a member of APICS, CILTA and SCLAA. Stanley has established several key relationships and initiatives between these associations, tertiary providers in WA, strategic industry projects in QLD and professional industry associations in Taiwan. More recently, Stanley has been instrumental in establishing (and driving) a Young Professionals group in WA and is about to provide the same commitment to a mentoring program as well. Stanley’s achievements and efforts for the betterment of our profession embody everything that this award seeks to highlight in a Future Leader.
