NATORI, Miyagi Prefecture--A two-story hotel consisting of orange and blue freight containers opened in Natori, Miyagi Prefecture, to help alleviate the accommodation shortage in areas affected by last year's natural disasters.
The hotel is the first of nine planned by Tokyo-based hotel operator Kachikaihatsu Co. in Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima, the three prefectures hardest hit by the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011.
All 314 guest rooms in the Natori hotel are singles.
The rate per night with two meals is 8,100 yen (about $101). So far, all 314 rooms have been fully booked on weekends.
The nine hotels built by Kachikaihatsu, listed on the Second Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange, will have about 3,000 rooms in total.
