Hidden job market prevents unemployed finding work
by Press Release on 2010-08-13 01:48:13Career experts believe that just a small proportion of job vacancies are advertised, and up to half of those do not exist. With more and more people across the UK facing redundancies during this recession, those without work are facing a tough challenge in finding work.
Ian Viner, Managing Director of Careers Consultancy, CareersIVyou, helps people who are out of work to understand the complicated and often frustrating world of job searching.
Ian says, “People don’t realise how few real jobs are advertised in places such as the internet.” He suggests that many jobs adverts on the internet are fake, to reel in vulnerable job seekers. So if the majority of jobs are hidden, where exactly can they be found?
“We strongly believe that it’s not really about where to find advertised jobs - although it does help to know more about which job sites are more likely to yield results – but it’s more about how to network effectively to unlock career opportunities” he continues.
“Consultancies like ours are wrongly perceived by the public to be expensive, but the return on investing in good job search skills is great. With just a little bit of knowledge about how to network and how to search effectively on the internet people are more likely to unlock a higher percentage of the hidden job market.”
Lindsay Blackman from Herts was recently looking for work, and found herself lost and helpless in a world of jobs sites and agencies. She approached CareersIVyou, an Outplacement organisation and after just a couple of coaching sessions felt confident in approaching her job search effectively.
Lindsay said, “After working with an Outplacement adviser I was able to make my CV stand out from the crowd and was able do some targeted job searching and networking. Not only did I find out how to create a powerful CV but I also knew exactly where to find my next job, which i did thanks to the help of CareersIVyou. Without that help I’d still be searching and applying for jobs against 100s of others, or for jobs that don’t even exist. I am overjoyed to have two good interviews this week.”
